Good

Most lenders will approve you, with rates near average. Keeping utilization low can push you into the next tier.

Your report is the story. Your score is the summary.

Credit report

Your financial history, compiled by the three major bureaus: Equifax, Experian and TransUnion.

What’s in it
Open and closed accounts, loan balances, payment history, bankruptcies and public records.
What it costs
Nothing. You’re legally entitled to free weekly copies from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com.

Credit score

A three-digit number, usually 300 to 850, that sums up your report so lenders can judge risk quickly.

FICO
The model most lenders use. The ranges in the tool above are FICO’s.
VantageScore
An alternative built jointly by the bureaus, with similar tiers running from subprime to superprime.

Many criteria go into a credit score, including:

  • Your bill-paying history, current unpaid debt, and the number and type of loans and accounts you have.
  • How long you’ve had your loan accounts open and how much of your available credit you’re using.
  • Whether you’ve had a debt sent to collections, a foreclosure or a bankruptcy, and how long ago.
  • Whether you’ve recently applied for new or more credit.

What moves your FICO score

Five factors, weighted like this. Two of them make up nearly two-thirds of your score.

Payment history

Your track record of paying bills on time. The single biggest factor.

Never miss a due date. Autopay the minimum on every account.
30%

Credit utilization

How much of your available revolving credit you’re using right now.

Keep balances under 30% of your limits, ideally under 10%.
15%

Length of credit history

The average age of your open accounts and the age of your oldest one.

Keep your oldest cards open, even if you rarely use them.
10%

Credit mix

A healthy variety of revolving accounts and installment loans, like auto loans and mortgages.

Don’t open loans just for the mix. Let it build naturally.
10%

New credit

How often you apply for credit. Each lender pull is a hard inquiry.

Space out applications. Rate-shop a car or home loan within a short window.

Checking your own credit is a soft inquiry. It never hurts your score.

Free, official, and worth bookmarking

Start here before paying anyone for anything. These are the government sources.

Freeze your credit. It’s free, and it works.

A credit freeze blocks new lenders from pulling your report. If someone steals your identity, they can’t open a card, loan or account in your name, because no lender will approve credit it can’t check.

  • Free by federal law. Freezing and unfreezing costs nothing at all three bureaus.
  • Zero impact on your score. Your existing accounts, payments and history keep working as normal.
  • Easy to lift when you need it. Unfreeze online or by phone, temporarily or permanently, in minutes.
  • You can still check your own credit. Free reports and your current creditors aren’t blocked.

Freeze at all three bureaus

Each bureau keeps its own report, so a freeze at one doesn’t cover the others. Do all three.

Equifax

By phone: 1-888-298-0045

Freeze at Equifax

Experian

By phone: 1-888-397-3742

Freeze at Experian

TransUnion

By phone: 1-888-909-8872

Freeze at TransUnion

Shopping for a car or home? Lift your freezes a day before you apply. A frozen report can stall an approval at the desk. Refreeze once the loan is done.
